How To Make A Rag Quilt
Are you having trouble finding solid information about how to make a rag quilt? It seems like a cool concept and most people would never have thought of doing this as an extra hobby. Most websites that briefly go over the methods involved are very vague and make it seem very confusing to get started.
I wanted to do something very special for my grandmother since she likes making her own things. I knew that she would really appreciate a rag quilt and would cherish it for a very long time. The problem was that I had no idea how to get started since I have never did any knitting or sewing before.
I went over to a few hobby stores and half of the people had no idea what I was talking about and the other half made it seem very complicated to get all the materials and start on the project. Most stores did not carry any books that would elaborate on the process and the few books that were available made all the steps seem complicated. I was really starting to think I was not going to find out how to make a rag quilt.
Just when I was about to give up on my project I decided to look around a tad more online. I looked past all the sites that had confusing information. Then I finally found an actual online book that talked about the process from start to finish. I had nothing to lose since all the information I had received before did not help at all.
I studied everything in detail and made to to have extra material in case I had any errors. After a dedicated weekend I had a beautiful rag quilt ready to give to my grandmother as her gift. Just as I thought she was very happy and I feel great that I applied myself to make something out of nothing.

The Amish Circle Quilt $22.99 The Amish women of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country have been creating exquisite quilted masterpieces since the 1800s. Amish quilts represent personal expression, craftsmanship, and frugality, and are the most desired in the world. This book is the first to take quilters inside the Amish tradition of the Circle letter. From each letter, a quilt block is created to represent a significant event in the life of the quilter; these letters and blocks are passed around a circle of 11 friends, and once 121 blocks have been created, they are joined together to create a beautiful work of art that tells the story of family and friends - a circle quilt. With this book, quilters will step into the everyday life of the Amish community and follow the journey of 11 women who maintain their friendships while keeping a record of their lives. Quilters will enjoy the heartwarming stories while following step-by-step instructions for creating their own Amish circle quilt, as well as a baby quilt, wall hanging, table runner and appliqud aprons and bags. |

Amish quilts for Sale
Not just anyone can produce an Amish quilt. It stand to reason that Amish quilts are made by Amish people.
A book written by Bettina Havig "Amish Quiltmaker," says there is a difference among Amish quilts and Amish made quilts. Amish quilts are the ones actually used in Amish homes. Amish quilters make quilts and sell them to help supplement the family's income.
The quilts used by the Amish in their homes are actually rather plain and utilitarian. They are different than the elaborate quilts Amish quilters create to sell.
Instead, the quilts used by the Amish in their homes use plain solid color fabrics and simple piecing designs. Treadle sewing machines are used by many quilt makers in Amish communities for their quilt projects. It's typically used to piece the quilt top. Then, the whole thing is hand quilted using a large floor frame to stretch it out.
Whether a home quilt has small prints in it or not often comes down to the community's acceptance. Some conservative communities will allow a small printed fabric to be used in home quilts. The church usually has heavy input in the community's opinion. Because some Amish communities are a little less conservative explains why you might see an occasional print in an Amish home quilt.
Now that you know this background information, why can't you make an Amish quilt? Amish is a religious fellowship. It's a Christian denomination known for its conservative, simple way of life. The church dates back to the late 1600s. If you were not indeed Amish, it would be disrespectful to claim to have made an Amish quilt.
What you can do is create an Amish inspired quilt. Select the quilt block pattern you will use. Insure it;s a simple quilt block, and that it's not too elaborate or it won't fit the trademark simplicity of the Amish.
Be sur to select your colors accordingly. Keep the colors simple. The quilt should not be too bright or bold, although every so often Amish quilters use jewel tones in their quilts to make them sparkle.
Colors like red or yellow aren't allowed to be used in sewing projects by some communities. Don't forget, you won't find many prints in an Amish quilt so your Amish inspired quilt should not have many either.
Most Amish Quilts have borders…sometimes more than one border. Borders are included in Amish quilts because they are an effective, simple use of fabric. So, if you are making a quilt inspired by the Amish, you will definitely want to include a border on it.
The Amish rely on hook and eye closures and snaps for most of their every day clothing. Trousers sometimes have a button for security.
Amish quilts don't need a lot of embellishing or bright colors because the hand work of the quilters is what makes them truly beautiful and extraordinary. The muted colors and simple patterns allow the art of the quilted stitches to shine through. Elaborate quilting designs on a simple backdrop create quite a contrast!

Help Fight the Winter Blues by Learning Quilting
How often have you seen a child running to a window and peering out at the falling snow with a big smile and a pumpkin like face. Most children love snow, and the more the better. I know when I was a child I certainly loved the snow, and for two reasons, if often kept me home from School that day, and it made for a very fun day playing in it. As we grow from children into adults we often stop playing in the snow and having such fun, especially if were males, since we have to act the tough and rugged way instead of showing emotions like a child's joy. Those that are lucky enough to have a playful spouse or children, know that this is a bunch of crap. Joy and having fun, is something we all need to experience, a world without laughter and fun would not be a very nice place for anyone.
On them cold winter days if your an adult and you find yourself alone, or with empty time on your hands, why not learn quilting. My Daughter made a really nice quilt a couple years back during the winter months. A quilt or quilting as it's called it usually made from pieces of scrap clothing items you no longer want or need, for instance a shirt that has a rip, could be used to cut into a few quilt squares.
Quilt squares or blocks can be whatever size you want, although most folks seem to cut their old clothing or other quilt material into 6x6 or 7x7 inch squares. The squares are then sewed together with other pieces or squares, then when the front of your quilt is complete, which is normally blanket size or larger, you can use what is called quilt bedding for inside filler. Bedding comes in large rolls, and it's like thick rolled up cotton. Once you have the bedding positioned, you can start sewing the back of the quilt onto the completed front piece that you made from the squares, most folks also sew across the main body a few times in different spots to help hold the bedding in place.
The above guide is for the absolute easiest type of quilt, that a beginner should generally start learning quilting with. Quilting can be very simple to extremely intricate and difficult, depending upon the size of your squares, and whatever shapes or designs you wish to make. The backing of the quilt is usually made from large pieces of fabric that is chosen for the color schemes or patterns.
If you want to get started with quilting, you should browse the internet to get familiar with all the different designs and some ideas for your first project. Most women say that if you can sew, you can do quilting, and if you have never sewn, you can always learn. The next time you find yourself alone or with nothing to do during the cold months, try your hand at quilting, it's a great way to make use of them old clothes that are not used anymore, and it's a great hobby to help fight the winter blues.
There is a website that describes numerous activities and other methods to help eliminate the Winter Blues, this website is called: Winter Activities - and it may be found at this url: http://www.winter-activities.com
You may publish this article in your ezine, newsletter or on your web site as long as it is reprinted in its entirety and without modification except for formatting needs or grammar corrections.

Handmade quilts as Displayed in Exhibitions and Trade Shows
Handmade quilts have a great scope of being showcased in exhibitions in different cities across the globe. These exhibitions enable an artist or weavers a chance to show their creations to thousands of visitors and buyers. In United States the NWQ Annual Quilt Show is one such fabulous event.
This annual show brings quilt makers, buyers, sellers, trade visitors and enthusiasts in general close together. This exhibition features brilliant creations by master weavers. Stunning designs and amazing varieties draw your attention. Creations in appliqué, needlework, embroidery, and weaving are a treat to watch. This exhibition is not only an opportunity for quilt makers to exhibit their craftsmanship but also to sell their creations. Many of these handmade quilts are real masterpieces and could be bought as prized possessions.
Northwest Quilters organizes this annual event for the benefit of both visitors and exhibitors. The exhibitors constitute weavers, craftsmen, artists, tailors, designers, embroidery experts, and departmental stores. Among the visitors are shop owners, media personnel, business promotion agents, art lovers, collectors, and enthusiastic buyers.
Another significant quilt exhibition is held in Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, Auburn in New York. Inception in 1981 this annual event attracts the most outstanding quilt makers. Handmade quilts have remarkable artistic worth and are treasured for their craftsmanship. This exhibition is an opportunity for weavers and buyers to interact and understand the details of handmade quilts. Workshops are held regularly to acquaint enthusiasts about the basics of quilt making. The different techniques of quilt making viz., knitting, weaving, appliqué, and stitching are explained and demonstrated in these workshops. Though these are not teaching centers in the strictest sense of the term, they are helpful in presenting a basic idea of quilt making.
This exhibition is an attempt to bring in traditional and modern day quilt makers on an even platform. Traditional rich creations are displayed alongside innovative designs in line and abstract compositions. Over the years brilliance has been observed in surface design of handmade quilts and their pictorial representations. Each year the exhibition gets enriched by newer designs and superior craftsmanship.
The traditional art of handmade quilts are being encouraged by art colleges and promotional agencies. Apart from trade shows and exhibitions of large scale, small scale shows are held in art colleges at regular intervals to encourage quilt makers and weavers. Quilt makers have also benefited substantially by these exhibitions and trade shows. Machine made quilts being cheaper and longer lasting have a mass appeal in commercial terms. Compared to these handmade quilts are expensive.
Exclusive design and superior craftsmanship make handmade quilts a superlative creation worthy of a royal patronage. As it is not easy to locate these weavers scattered over territories, art shows gives an opportunity to view and buy their creations. It is a marvelous effort by trade promotion agencies and welfare associations to bring these forgotten craftsmen to the forefront and keep a tradition alive.
Exclusivity of handmade quilts has made them a collector's choice across countries and continents. These quilts if preserved properly could be used for generations.
