Hybrid Timber Frame homes
Timber frame homes are the design of choice for dreamers who pass time creating endless possibilities for that perfect custom look that only their house will have. Using a hybrid approach increases those possibilities even more.
Hybrid refers to the integration of more than one product design. Atlantic Timberframes creates hybrids by combining Post & Beam with Structural Insulation Panels (SIPS) as well as conventional stick framing. The beauty of wood combined with the efficiency of insulation panels creates a synergy of green technology for today's modern building business that ensures longevity. At a time when other building models are failing in the current housing market, Timber Frame Hybrids are becoming more mainstream.
There are many ways to incorporate a Hybrid into a design plan. Atlantic Timberframe Hybrids may include a free standing timber frame unit or simply involve individual accent pieces created with mortise and tenon joinery. Our most successful use of hybrid technology has been a timber frame center section surrounded by more conventional construction to complete the house. This creates a great room with the perfect atmosphere suitable for large family gatherings and other celebratory events. Another popular design is to add a timber frame great room as a wing of the house. Families often use this design to create an entertainment area that provides noise and traffic control for the rest of the house. A wing design is also frequently used to create a private master bedroom suite.
Enhancements to both the exterior and interior look of hybrid are obvious. With the Hybrid approach countertops and cabinets do not have to be adapted to the posts. Is A Timber Frame Garage Right For You?
Timber garages are something of a new idea most people, but for people who have lived amongst forests for generations they have always been used, and to great effect. The fact is, from an economic standpoint people have always used the materials that are at their feet. If you live in forestland you build many things from wood alone, and if you live in the cities (more recently) you construct buildings from concrete and brick - after all, they do last longer than wood. Unfortunately, concrete and brick is more expensive, and there isn't always a real need for it. Fact is, timber buildings live very much in harmony with surrounding nature, they are relatively cheap to construct, and provided they are treated, last for a long time. When most of us think of timber buildings we think of the traditional shed, a building that has frequented many a garden around the world - cheap, reliable and very functional. But how would one go about build timber garage, effectively what is a large shed? Building styles Depending on what you would like to keep in the garage dictates what type of building style you should opt for. Broadly speaking, you can have a slatted or a log style. If you are storing anything of substantial expense, a car for example, you should choose the log style far and beyond the slatted option. This is because logs are a lot more robust and you want durable strength when it comes to the threat of thieves and bad weather. (Ideally you'd actually want to opt for a brick garage if you were going to be keeping a car in there for extra peace of mind, but if you are limited by your geographic location a log timber garage is the way to go) Blueprints This is the foundation of the whole project so you don't want to skimp here. It surprises me how many people look for free blueprints when they are investing time and money into something they will potentially using for decades, don't fall into that delusional trap - it only wastes your time. Log Home Additions - How to Add to Your Log Home
When someone builds a log home for himself, it is usually their final home, their dream home. The log home represents a lifestyle choice rooted in the desire to get away from it all. It is not a home they plan to move away from any time soon.
But when that final home is no longer large enough, and moving out is not an option, the only solution is to enlarge it with an addition. However, adding onto these homes is somewhat trickier than adding to a conventional home. Because the home is build from solid timber material, modifying the structure is not as simple as moving studs and adding headers.
When it comes to adding onto your log home, here are a few considerations:
Consider how you might access the new space from the existing house. In many cases a window can be made into a doorway to create the new entry. However, there may be limitations as to making the opening wider than the window area itself.
Avoid connecting at the corners. The crisscross ends make for a difficult area to join to. Yes it can be done, but it creates more work for the builder.
To get the matching log look, consider using either full-log material or half-log siding. If full-log material is used, be sure to allow for the settlement of the new addition where the connection is made. An addition which looks great at the start may perform poorly if settlement is not allowed for.
In some cases a smaller connector works best to pull the main addition away from the house. This strategy often creates options you do not have when adding a large room directly to the house.
Have a well-defined plan for how you want to use the new space. Common additions include: family rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, sun-rooms and even in-law apartments.
Hire someone with experience. There is a correct technique for cutting into the existing home which creates a connection that will both look good and provide a good weather seal. A log home builder will understand the dos and don'ts of building a log home addition. This may not be the case for a contractor without similar experience.
Finally, find the right balance of log and timber features to suit your budget. Your builder should be able to explain the options and how they affect the overall cost.
With good planning, adding to your log home can be a worthwhile experience and add many years to the enjoyment of your beautiful home.

Post and Beam homes – Old World Look In A Modern Home
