It was a huge success, selling thousands of copies every year since then. Beat the bugs at cottage rental
Picture it: you're sitting on the deck, drink in hand. The sun is setting over the tree lined lake in front of you and you are feeling your shoulders come down from around your ears, the stress slowly leaving your body. Then you hear it. That ubiquitous whine that is tied to cottage living. No, I'm not talking about the kids wanting some more. I'm talking about bugs. In Ontario cottage country, the biggest impediment to a good time is bugs. They can drive you indoors faster than a leaking honey wagon driving down a bumpy road!
In my world, there are two types of bugs: Flighters and Biters. Flighters fly around and are pesky, but overall, they don't sting / bite. Biters are the nasty beasts that drive us crazy. So what biting / stinging bugs are endemic to cottage country in Ontario? Black flies, mosquitoes, deer flies, stable flies and horse flies are the most common. Of course, there are flies, bees and wasps but, frankly, they won't bug you much (yes, pun intended) if you don't bug them. When it comes to black flies and mosquitoes, however, you might think at times that they are hiding in the bushes, plotting for the arrival of exposed human skin! One thing to avoid is cedar trees - if you have some on the property, it isn't the place to set up the hammock! Flighters and biters of all types love the sweet scent of cedar.
The Weather Network (www.theweathernetwork.com) has a very useful feature: a bug report. Simply visit the site's "Bug report: Ontario Cities Index", from there, you simply pick the closest town / city to your cottage and ... voila... an update on whether certain biters are "in season" or even if they are native to the area selected. It doesn't give you a long term forecast, however, so if you are planning for the summer or fall, this will give you a quick guideline for most of Ontario cottage country:
Mid-May to end of June - Black flies are at their worst. They have a real partiality to head / ear flesh. One of the best tools we've found to cope with them are Fly Patches - you stick a sticky patch on the back of a baseball cap and the black flies get stuck on it. A little gross when you take off your hat and they're still flapping, but better than having a chunk of your scalp removed. They really don't like windy areas but they do like fast running rivers and shady spots so find one and avoid the other, during black fly season!
Mid-May to August – Mosquitoes. These are ever-present, particularly in the shade or after sunset. Many a summer wedding has been ruined as the guests flapped their arms around, avoiding the skeeters, sending wines glasses and cake plates flying! More importantly, as carriers of West Nile Virus, mosquitoes are more than just annoying. Keeping the bites to a minimum is important to your families' health.
Want to avoid them entirely and you don't have to worry about back to school? September is perfection! Want to brave them anyways? Be sure to be covered up: if you're going for a hike, wear light, long pants and tuck them into socks and a long sleeved shirt, all in light colors - they are more attracted to dark colors. You might want to consider a bug hat and shirt - not the height of fashion but better than being covered in red, itchy bites.
Bug spray containing DEET is the order of the day. I love the idea of citronella... it's safer, it smells nice... I loved it until I found myself running directly into the river near my home while wearing it because I found out that it didn't work! Remember that DEET products aren't recommended for small children (under 6 months) - their bodies simply shouldn't be exposed to DEET. If you can keep your wee one in a play pen, get a bug net so that they can still enjoy the great outdoors with you. According to Today's Parent magazine (Originally published in Today's Parent, July 2009) for older kids: Children aged six months to two years should use bug repellent with 10 percent DEET and only once a day. Those aged two to 12 should use the same concentration, with applications up to three times a day. Only children over age 12 should use 30 percent DEET and, even then, sparingly. Never apply it on the face and hands, regardless of age. It needs to be washed off with soap and water at the end of the day.
With a little planning and time management, bugs don't have to be the bane of your cottage existence. So get the bug spray out and enjoy your summer!

The Break-In $10.38 Although radio-friendly singer/songwriter Ari Hest's music (the rhythm, the chords) isn't always particularly distinguishable from similarly emotionally accessible artists -- Matt Nathanson, Josh Kelley, Jason Mraz -- the Bronx native has an important advantage over his peers: he possesses a better-than-average voice, something that can't be faked by ProTools, and something that he accentuates on his second full-length, The Break-In. It seems to have developed tremendously since his first record, Someone to Tell, came out in 2004, and the results are impressive. His range, for example, has expanded, or is at least displayed more prominently here: he moves from the low, sonorous notes on tracks like the opener "When and If" to a convincing falsetto on the title track without ever sounding strained or unnatural. It's a resonant, affecting tenor that blends well not only with itself but also with Hest's acoustic guitar and Mitchell Froom's clean production, and doesn't need to be forced into sounding emotional and honest. And songwise, although Hest sticks to simple, standard progressions and melodies, the way the electric guitar, keyboards, and percussion enter and exit, his allusions to Beach Boys-esque harmonies, the occasional times he slips in an unexpected note, even the crooner-ish jazzy track, "I've Got You," make The Break-In better than your typical sentimental-male pop album. The songs are hooky, of course, but not overly so, and they don't depend on catchiness to carry them. The edgier "Right of Way" plays on lightly distorted electric guitars and driving vocal lines, while "Leaving Her Alone" is gentle and softer and contains one of Hest's best phrases ("Here, here is an empty room/Filled with an empty man"). In fact, it's the lyrics that are the only thing on the album that really fall short, especially in comparison to what he shows he can accomplish in other fields. The rhymes are uncomplicated and sometimes cliché, or at least very ordinary, which contrasts with Hest's strong voice, and keeps The Break-In from reaching past the boundaries of adult alternative and into actual poetic singer/songwriter territory. Short Break $19.18 When Robert Wyatt followed up his welcome return of a CD (Dondestan) with this EP "only" two years later, some fans thought a new era of productivity had hit the reclusive singer. (Alas, it took until 1998 for a full-length follow-up to appear.) A Short Break is a musical scrapbook, a glimpse of half-thought ideas and hints of melody -- atmospheres, not songs. Armed with a lone piano, a set of cymbals, some rudimentary percussion, an organ, and his plaintive voice, Wyatt's pieces are melancholy, sad, and contemplative. They are also, it must be added, not that interesting, and worth listening to only because the man is capable of so much more (it would not have even been released if it was anybody else). Only "Unmasked" could have made it onto Dondestan, and sounds like an outtake. Mini Breaks in Cornwall
I always spend time thinking about taking a summer holiday or short trip - it seldom occurs though, just once per year on average I get a real holiday with my family, friends or partner. One thing which I see as a more and more inviting idea is that of mini break holidays - taking advantage of the bank holidays and a day or so each side to make the most of time. Consider that going away for a week or longer your probably need to sort a whole bunch of stuff out before you head out, less needs to be sorted on a shorter break and one will hopefully not spend as much money on their holiday.
Cornwall is a perfect place to take a mini break, there is loads to do and tourists can fly directly into the County from some European countries and domestically from London. The transportation network has had much investment and is capable of providing amenities for holiday makers - albeit a little cramped during the peak summer months.
Some cool ideas for a short break around Cornwall:
Depending upon the time scales you have given yourself a day to two days, I would recommend during the first day heading up to the Eden Project and spending the entire day there - visiting each of the amazing bio domes and amazing at the entire operation, grab your lunch here, there is so much to see you could spend the entire day. Follow the Eden Project up with dinner somewhere in Fowey; there are some fantastic pubs and eateries here capable of rustling up some tasty treats! Accommodation can be sourced in East Cornwall or booked in advance; personally I would book in advance.
Take a look at some of the alternative options for accommodation - typically hotels and guest houses in this area are quite pricey, camping or hiring a campervan gives you the freedom and mobility to stay anywhere in the County of Cornwall, next to a beach, in the woodlands.. anywhere (legal).
On your next day be sure to head to the coast, my preference (and probably bias) recommends the north coast, driving the entire coast gives you the chance to visit some of the fantastic little Cornish seaside towns, villages - on this coast there is such a contrast between say the likes of quaint Padstow and the party surf town of Newquay. Head as far as you can in a day with occasional stops in places which interest you.
If you have some more time then Cornwall has so much more to offer you, each coast has its unique rugged features and spoils of beautiful beaches and quaint townships, enjoy!

The Relaxing honeymoon

The area is made up of thousands of deserted islands, vast lagoons with infinite shades of blue and turquoise, and beautiful underwater coral gardens, a natural paradise for a tropical honeymoon.
The religion is mainly Islamic and the people are a mixture of Sri Lankan, South East Asian and Aryan origin, Dhivehi being the native language. The Maldives has always been a busy maritime route for the African, Arab and South East Asian mariners, and the sea now plays a major roll in tourism by providing exciting water activities.
Snorkeling, diving, underwater photography, are major activities here with one of the highest underwater visibility distance of 50 meters. New to the list is surfing but it's a growing one with the O Neill Deep Blue contest being held here this year.
If you prefer doing nothing at all the luxurious resorts will cater to your every need, with the majority containing relaxing spas and stunning scenery there is no need to move from your resort, although a spot of late night fishing relaxing under the night sky sounds like a treat you might want to enjoy.
Go and Have some fun
If you cant stand the idea of long lazy days and nights why not take a trip to the premier entertainment destination of the world, Las Vegas. Within reasonable distance from most states in the US Vegas the city that never sleeps has everything a couple who are young at heart and looking for fun can enjoy.
Famously known as the play ground of the rich and famous Vegas has something for everyone with its concerts, nightclubs, comedy headliners, art and its famous productions shows, no one will be bored. For the gamblers at heart there are plenty of casinos to hang out in and maybe even strike it rich, who knows! The hotels in Vegas are very impressive with some of the most original and luxurious around The Venetian and Mirage are just two to mention. There is also the option to visit the grand canon which isn't too far, you can take a helicopter ride straight from Vegas to the Grand Canyon and see one of the most beautiful natural terrain there is, or why not hire a car and take the 5 hour drive, you stay over night in a log cabin.
There is plenty to do when you get there, if you want to get down and dirty you can take a trip down into the floor of the canyon which will take about 5 to 6 hours on horse back or mule, there you can spend the night sleeping around a campfire covered by a blanket of stars. If that's not adventurous enough why not go water rafting down the Colorado River that should put some wind in your sails.
Slippery Slopes
Why not whisk off to a winter wonderland on the white snow capped mountains of Canada. From the mighty Rockies to the alluring Laurentain's Canada's mountains are perfect for winter sports. With its natural topography and perfect snow accumulation the Canadians have created some of the best ski resorts world wide since the 1960s.The diversity of the resorts is one of its best attractions, from the champion slopes of whistler to the laid back hangouts of Red Mountain there is a little something for everyone.
Tremblant is a popular resort described as a cross between a cute Quebecois village and a theme park there is lots of fun to be had here and you don't have to be a professional skier to enjoy yourself. The groups are of mixed ability and you can have fun learning to ski, but prepare to get wet.
Tremblant is a beautiful quaint village with brightly colored buildings knitted together along the main street of boutiques and restaurants. There are plenty of cozy wood cabin bistros and cafes to relax and enjoy after the ski day. In the evening the village comes to life with open-air theaters of fire-eaters, clowns on stilts, and live music. There are also other activities such as skating on lac Miroir and the fun water slides of La Source. You will be very busy during the day and all cozy and loved up at night.
Trip around Europe
For those culture seekers among you this would be a perfect honeymoon, this is the perfect chance to see all the historical sites you've dreamed of. To see the beautiful and romantic city of Paris for the first time together, late night strolls along the champs Elises and whispering sweet nothings under the Eiffel tower. Stop off in Venice and take an evening gondola ride down the famous canals before dining in the fabulous Venetian restaurants.
Visit London the home of William Shakespeare and The Great Queen Elizabeth I you can do a historical tour around the streets of London and be brought back in time to the streets of the gruesome Jack the Ripper and the famous burning of London bridge. Then see the beautiful Westminster abbey and stop of at Buckingham Palace to visit the queen's home maybe have some tea and scones if you're lucky.
Not forgetting the diverse provinces of Ireland, the stunning west of Ireland with its ancient cultures and Gaelic speaking natives of Connemara take a currach ride over to the nearly deserted Aryan Island and see how the ancient Celts once lived. You can also visit the city of Dublin, which is drenched in culture and history the place to go to have the "craic" as always the Irish know how to have a good time.
The best thing about this type of Honeymoon is you can cater it to fulfill your desires the continent is your oyster.
