Whether meant to become a vacation home or just an additional structure in your yard, log cabins definitely add allure to a specific space. If you plan on building one, might as well go and look over some small log cabin plans. I have to warn you though, there's a lot of effort and cost involved in building even a small cabin. However, when you get to finish the cabin with your own hands, there's fewer more satisfying feeling.
Structures made of natural timbers certainly can make the place appealing to most. It lends a relaxing look. Thus, it's really small wonder why most people would dream of a log cabin that's away from the bustle of city life and its pressures.
If you've had considerable experience in woodworking, you might try your hands in building a log cabin. It won't be easy, but you sure would learn a lot from the process along the way. But before going ahead with the construction, might as well be acquainted with the things to consider in building a small cabin.
Log Selection and Preparation
Just about any type of log can be used to build a log cabin. Just make sure that the logs are relatively straight. A good diameter for logs are 8 or 10 inches and has minor taperings. Conifers like pine, fir, tamarack and pine provides a good selection of log. Hardwood can also be used but its sapwood would be a problem since it is susceptible to borer or fungal infestations.
To prepare the logs, you need to partially the peel its bark using draw knife. Then, you can air dry it by stacking it above the ground to allow for better circulation of air. This is left for 1 year or more, the longer the better. If you're ready to use the logs, remove the barks completely.
Foundation
Foundation for your small log cabin is also another consideration. Some people opt to build their cabin without any foundation. This is a particularly good idea if you build it in a temporary location. The most common foundation for these cabin designs would probably be using stones. However, these days, you can just opt for an easier way to build your foundation by using bricks and cement.
In setting up the foundation, you have to decide if you want to have a basement. If you don't, you only need to excavate the area just below the frost line. There, you can set up footings and build a the wall of the foundation at least 20 inches above grade level.
Small Log Cabin Plans
If you want to have an easier time in building your own log cabin, I strongly suggest you use excellent log cabin plans. Not only will you be properly guided along the way, it also helps during the preparation of materials and having an accurate estimated cost for the project.
An excellent blueprints will also help you with its step by step layout of the process you need to follow to build a cabin. And of course, having some working diagrams and illustration would help tremendously as well.
