Deciding they wanted to append their near-constant instrumental output with vocals -- that have primarily occurred on stages rather than in the studio -- they flew in Rhianna "Freckles" Kenny to collaborate in the writing, arranging, and recording process. Cut in just over a week, Breaks from the Border reflects the bubbling, energetically infectious sounds of the New Mastersounds at their best, while adding depth and dimension to some beautifully breezy, elastic, harmonically savvy vocals that never manage to get in the way of the quartet's knotty, rave-up funky grooves. All four members harmonize on opener "Take What You Need," which merely highlights their backbeat-driven Meters-influenced funk with an into-the-red bassline groove led by Pete Shand. They pick up the tempo with "Run the Gauntlet," featuring a smoking B-3 solo by Joe Tatton. The knotty breaks by kit man Simon Allen fuel the shimmering group vocals on "On the Border," while the finger-popping dialogue between the bassline and Eddie Roberts' jazz guitar wrangling on "Freckles" accounts for one of the finest moments on the disc. The burning Afro-funk at the heart of "Walk in These Shoes" reveals the quartet at full rhythm burn, even with the four-part harmonies adding a breezy, humid element to the mix. Roberts' guitar break is one of the best on any New Mastersounds studio effort. "Josus" walks on the jazz side of funk and "Can You Get It?" sounds like an update of the Meters' bubble and broil. Kenny takes her own lead vocal break on the album-closing jazzer "Up in the Air," with spacy psychedelic soul grooves from the New Mastersounds. Eccentric Breaks and Beats $13.58 In the music business, if you're good enough at something, eventually you'll be copied or bootlegged. The Numero Group is by far one of the top labels for discovering unfound or lost musical treasures that sometimes never even made it to 45s. In this technological age when beats are often pieced together on desktop computers through software like FL Studio, music is either bought digitally or easily encoded to digital format, and distribution can take place on peer-to-peer sites, bootlegging is even easier. The crate-digger mentality often centers around finding a loop or break that no one else has sampled in the past. So in that regard, Numero puts itself in a leading position to have its catalog sampled. Honestly, it's surprising that it hasn't happened before now. With an expansive artist roster that ranges from Northern soul and early hip-hop to folk and gospel, coupled with its knack for quality control, Numero has a catalog that's a beatmaker's dream, as the label has done the hard work for you. A production collective known only as Shoes took it upon themselves to create an old-school 40-minute beat tape divided into two 20-minute halves. With beats that span brooding to sweet, they all hit with a neck-snapping nod to boom bap. The beats are culled from everything from voice-overs of Catherine Howe, an English folkster, to sound snippets from Al Jarnow's 1979 "Cosmic Clocks" animated art piece, which was only released three months previously on Numero's Celestial Navigations. Given such a short turnaround time of beats being made from recently released material, it makes you wonder whether it was truly a bootleg job or commissioned work that is being cleverly marketed. It truly makes no difference, as Eccentric Breaks and Beats is a document that needn't have its authenticity, apocryphal or not, dissected to be validated. Numero saw the value in releasing it whether it was the label's concept or not. Given that Numero is used to paying homage to yesteryear, someone turned the tables on the label by honoring its digging with a nod to an old, albeit more recent, format in the beat tape. Obviously assembled with a discerning ear, the cleverly crafted chops and samples are there. The only thing missing is the ribbon between two spools encased in hard, clear plastic and a boombox placed on a street corner or next to a chainlink fence at a public basketball park blaring the beats. ~ Eric Luecking, Rovi |

Short Breaks in Lake District Cottages
The more relaxed stipulations on minimum stays are the case not just at hotels and bed and breakfast businesses but it is now the case for many self catering property owners.
Self catering is becoming more and more popular. The consumer is seeing the many benefits of staying in a self catering property in the UK as opposed to either staying in a hotel or going abroad. Tourism industry members are seeing the profits made from owning holiday homes and the rentals of them. For second home owners, it is the perfect way to make some money out of the property whilst the owners are not using it. In the tough economic time, this is a practice that is being seen more and more to alleviate mortgage payments and running costs. Holiday property owners and companies are also noting that more and more enquiries are for short breaks, typically 3 or 4 nights. The Lake District lends itself very well to a self catering holiday. It has some of the quaintest cottages and properties in the UK set in the most spectacular surroundings. Many walkers and adventure enthusiasts prefer staying in a self catering property for many reasons. It is often the case that Lake District cottages are located in a more rural or isolated locations which suits walkers and climbers enabling them to step right out of the cottage front door and up a mountain. Lake District self catering properties allow complete freedom to come and go when you please and the storage areas for bikes, walking and climbing gear for example. The Mount Somerset Hotel Spa Break
The sun was shining as we made our way past Stonehenge on our way to our eagerly anticipated Mount Somerset spa break, so we knew we were in for a good day. As we approached down a country lane and turned into the Mount Somerset Hotel estate, we were taken back by the elegant and Georgian-esque hotel. Sat at the top of a winding path and surrounded by what seemed like miles upon miles of Somerset countryside, it truly is a stunning sight for the eyes.
Inside the hotel, the luxurious feel continues with an impressive chandelier and staircase that sweeps up and around Reception. After being checked in by the friendly and professional Oliver, it was time to see if the room lived up to the pictures on Luxury Spa Breaks - and we weren't disappointed! The room was spacious and luxurious combining all the modern facilities with the hotels rich heritage.
Next it was time to venture into the spa. Only opened in October 2010, the spa spans over two floors and oozes class, sophistication and luxury! After enjoying what seemed like a never ending massage it was time to use the facilities, which included a thermal suite, foot spas, experience and bucket showers as well as the fantastic hydrotherapy pool which makes it the perfect place to unwind and rejuvenate.
Feeling completely relaxed there was some time to savour the fantastic bedroom, and luxurious roll top bath, before sampling a stunning dinner prepared by the hotel's chef. Sourcing local ingredients, the dinner was mouth watering and full of flavour. After a comfortable and quiet nights sleep we had a cooked to order full English breakfast before making our way back along the picturesque A303.
Who would we recommend The Mount Somerset to? Well, it's perfect for those looking for a romantic getaway in the countryside due to its quiet location, nearby attractions and stunning characteristics. Plus, with a fully equipped spa and an impressive array of treatments you may want to stay for an extra night....
Would we go back? Yes definitely, and it won't be long before we do - this time maybe for two nights so we can explore the surrounding area.
