Scandinavian designs have very clean lines, focusing more on the materials used than the design itself. There is very little ornamentation, if any. French Provincial, on the other hand, relies on heavy ornamentation, with most of the actual wood concealed beneath paint or gilding. The rustic, or log cabin, style is the least finished of all styles, allowing you to appreciate the natural wood qualities. Sometimes, one edge will be completely untreated, with the contours and characteristics of the mother tree readily apparent. A very utilitarian design, common wood choices are pine, cedar, fir and spruce.

Mission design has very thick lines and uses mainly flat oak panels. The hardware, made from black iron, is heavy and dark. This style is often associated with the early twentieth century art nouveau movement.

Oriental, or Asian, design uses readily renewable materials like bamboo and rattan. Often painted red, for luck, it is commonly adorned with landscape paintings or Asian characters. Some older pieces can be quite heavy.

Lastly, Shaker furniture is focused on function and symmetry and looks good to the eye while being practical in the home. Rooted in the Shaker egalitarian religious community, it meets the needs of that community rather than the desires of its maker.
