Discover the beauty of the English Lake District on a cottage holiday

Stepping out from a Lake District cottage the attractions lie, quite literally, on the doorstep, underfoot. This landscape has been written about and painted by many famous writers and artists such as Wordsworth and Turner. There is no better way of experiencing it than by spending time exploring the dramatic setting on foot. The character of the lakes varies, from the popular and pastoral Windermere, to the brooding Wast Water, the beautiful Ullswater to the island-strewn Derwent Water. Whether walking the high fells or the many lakeside paths, or just enjoying the scenery from a boat steaming on one of the lakes, you cannot fail to be captivated by this walkers' paradise.

Windermere is England's longest lake and most well known. It is very popular with visitors as the bustling towns of Windermere, Ambleside and Bowness all nestle on its eastern shore. Bowness is Cumbria's most popular destination, with the town busy for much of the year. People come to enjoy the lake for sailing and water sports, or just to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the area and the town's delightful setting or even a leisurely cruise.

Wast Water is perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all the lakes. It is England's deepest lake and is simply stunning, surrounded by fells such as Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike - England's highest mountain. The road winding along the lakeshore to the head of the Wasdale Valley offers impressive views of the famous screes that drop dramatically to the water's edge. Wordsworth described it as ‘long, stern and desolate'. It has not lost any of its power to surprise, charm and thrill us today, so much so that in 2007 it was named as Britain's favourite view in a television programme.

Ullswater bends and twists its way through spectacular panoramas against a backdrop of mountain scenery on one side and a gently curving shoreline of green fields and woodlands on the other. The perfect way to enjoy the lake is by taking a cruise on one of the steamers, with sailings all year round. There are regular sailings between Pooley Bridge and Glenridding, calling at Howtown on the eastern shore. A popular option is to take the steamer from Glenridding to Howtown and then walk back along the lakeshore.

The glistening waters of Derwent Water with its four islands, are overlooked by the famous Catbells peak and at the far end, the narrow entrance to beautiful Borrowdale, guarded by Castle Crag. Whether you are striking out onto the high fells or just strolling along the shoreline, this is fantastic walking country.
